If you are one of those individuals who tends to have lunch in the office, it is highly likely that you use them on a daily basis; and if you are lucky enough to be able to have lunch at home, you probably use them occasionally or to store food in. We all have Tupperwarecontainers at home and the majority of us use them regularly.
But which ones are the safest? The glass containers or the plastic Tupperware? Can they both be used indistinctly? Can we use them with all the electrical household appliances? Let’s see what we can use each of them for.
The plastic Tupperware containers are extremely popular household items: they are the cheapest, the easiest to carry around because they are the lightest;they are perfect to freeze food in or simply to store it in… Glass containers on the other hand are more delicate and bulky, although they are also ideal to store and freeze food in.
Plastic Tupperware containers: perfect to carry food around in
Plastic Tupperware containers are very practical to carry food around in, for example if we eat at the office every day. Of course, they should not be put in the microwave seeing as some of the plastic components can migrate into the food. In turn, the plastic Tupperware containers tend to retain more of the smells of the food kept in them and they can alter the taste of the food, even after cleaning them thoroughly.
It is important that when it comes to buying plastic Tupperware containers we make sure that they are made out of food grade plastics (there is a drawing of a fork on the back of the packaging) and that, if the food has to be heated up, it is put on a plate and the Tupperware container is not put into the microwave.
Moreover, the material that the plastic Tupperware containers are made out of might not always be recyclable or biodegradable, and theirservice life is shorter than that of glass containers.
Glass containers: great for cooking
As for glass containers, these can be used with all electrical household appliances and they are safe at all temperatures, both in the oven, the microwave, the dishwasher, the fridge or the freezer. Glass is much easier to clean, it does not retain smells or the taste of food items with use, it does not warp over time and it can be recycled.
However, glass containers are usually more expensive, even though they withstand the heat better; they take longer to heat up.
It is a good idea to have plastic Tupperware containers for certain things (an outing to the countryside, for example, where you do not want to be carrying anything heavy), to take food in (but not to heat the food up in) or to freeze; and glass containers can be used to cook or heat up food.
